Karitori(Harvesting)

After the leaves fall, Kozo is cut down in November.
Kozo belongs to the mulberry family. It is characterized by its thick and long fibers.

Mushi(Steaming)

Kozo is steamed. It makes easier to peel off the bark.

Kawahagi(Stripping/Bark peeling)

The bark is stripped off and dried. Then the barks with specks are removed completely.

Yukizarashi(Snow-bleaching)

The bark is placed on the snow-covered fields and bleached by exposing to the sun,absorbing snow moisture. Then the bark is washed.

Shajuku(Boiling)

Akunuki(Harshness removal)

Chiritori(Purifying)

Impurities in the bark are picked out by hand.

Dakai,Senshoku(Beating,Fiber loosening,Dyeing), Neri(Tororo Aoi) added

Tororo Aoi is a kind of hollyhock. Its roots are crushed to make "Neri" or mucilage.
It prevents the fibers from setting and entangling and it strengthens paper.
It also makes the sheets of paper separate easier.

Kamisuki(Scooping)

Shiage(Finishing)

When completely dry, each sheet of paper is inspected and sorted out by hand.
